French Bulldogs and Pugs Could Face Breeding Ban in Norway, Says ITV’s Dr Scott Miller
Norway has taken a groundbreaking step in animal welfare by banning the selective breeding of flat-faced dogs, such as British Bulldogs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. The Oslo District Court ruled that this practice is cruel and leads to serious health issues for the dogs, in violation of Norway’s Animal Welfare Act.
Dr. Scott Miller, a veterinarian with over 20 years of experience, expressed his concerns about the health outcomes of breeding brachycephalic dogs. These breeds, with their flat faces and abnormal skull shapes, often suffer from breathing difficulties, overheating, arthritis, and neurological conditions.
Animal Protection Norway, the group behind the legal challenge, hailed the court’s decision as a victory for the well-being of dogs. Dr. Miller warned that other flat-faced breeds, like French Bulldogs and Pugs, could also face a similar ban in the future if breeding practices do not change.
While the ban may not be suitable for the UK, Dr. Miller urged the government to work with breeders and kennel clubs to prioritize the health of these beloved animals. He emphasized the importance of breeding standards that prioritize the well-being of the dogs over aesthetic preferences, to prevent unnecessary suffering and health issues in these breeds.
