Guide dog known as the “Dogfather” retires after siring 300 puppies

Guide Dog Fathering Over 300 Puppies Retires from Charity Work – Trigger’s Legacy
Banbury Guide Dogs’ star Trigger, also known as the Dogfather, is retiring from charity work after fathering an impressive total of 323 puppies. The nine-year-old golden retriever has fathered 39 litters, with one in 2021 producing a record-breaking 16 puppies for Guide Dogs.
Trigger’s offspring have been placed all over the UK, bringing “independence” and “confidence” to blind and partially sighted individuals in cities like London, Glasgow, Cardiff, and the Isle of Wight. In addition to his UK-based progeny, Trigger has also sired litters in France and the Netherlands, expanding the reach of guide dog partnerships.
The charity is hopeful that Trigger’s son Billy will continue his legacy, with plans for him to potentially join the breeding program in the future. Trigger’s final litter, consisting of five daughters and one son, will be starting their guide dog journeys soon under the care of volunteer “puppy raisers.”
Janine Dixon, head of Guide Dogs breeding operations, praised Trigger’s “gentle nature and excellent health,” noting that he has been a valuable asset to the program. Trigger will retire in Banbury, where his longtime breeding dog volunteer, Sarah Bryne, will officially adopt him.
As Trigger enters retirement, the charity looks forward to the continued impact of his offspring in creating a new generation of guide dogs with his exceptional genes.
