Why Dachshunds in Germany May Soon Be Banned from Breeding | World News

Germany’s Kennel Club Petitions Against Draft Law Threatening Dachshunds
The potential new law in Germany has sparked controversy and concern among dog lovers, particularly those who adore the beloved dachshund breed. The draft law, which aims to prevent torture breeding by prohibiting certain canine characteristics, has raised alarms within the country’s Kennel Club.
The proposed law lists various “symptoms” that should not be reproduced in dogs, including hairlessness, reduced life expectancy, skeletal abnormalities, and teeth malformations. However, the Kennel Club has pointed out that the dachshund’s short legs could be classified as an “abnormality,” putting the breed at risk of being banned from breeding.
In response to the draft law, the Kennel Club has launched a petition calling for amendments to the legislation to prevent the potential extinction of healthy dog breeds. The club argues that the law could lead to confusion among law enforcement, veterinarians, breeders, and dog owners, as it seems to suggest that any breed visually different from the original wolf type should not be allowed to reproduce.
Not only dachshunds but other popular breeds like English and French bulldogs, pugs, boxers, toy poodles, and cocker spaniels could also face breeding restrictions if the draft law is passed. The Kennel Club emphasizes the importance of creating a list of banned characteristics based on scientific facts and expert opinions to ensure the health and quality of life of animals.
Despite the concerns raised by the Kennel Club, Germany’s agriculture ministry has denied that the reform would result in a ban on specific breeds like dachshunds. The ministry clarified that the reform is intended to strengthen existing laws against torture breeding.
The petition launched by the Kennel Club has garnered over 14,000 signatures, reflecting the widespread support for protecting healthy dog breeds in Germany. As the debate continues, dog lovers and breed enthusiasts are closely monitoring the developments to ensure the preservation of beloved breeds like the dachshund.
