Hawaii Pet Owners Embracing CBD Products for Their Pets’ Health and Behavior Issues

The Growing Trend of CBD Use for Pets in Hawaii: Regulation and Concerns

Hawaii’s pet owners are turning to CBD to help their furry friends with physical and behavioral issues, but the lack of regulation has some experts concerned.

CBD, a component of hemp, has gained popularity for its potential health benefits for both humans and animals. Local veterinarians like Michael King have seen an increase in inquiries from pet owners about using CBD for their pets.

One pet owner, Bradley Kealoha Oana, saw significant improvements in his French bulldog Koda’s health after incorporating CBD into his diet. Koda, who had cardiovascular and growth problems, gained more energy and became less anxious after using CBD.

Similarly, Sean Riley, a canine behavior psychologist, noticed improvements in his Dobermann pinscher’s mobility and quality of life after using CBD for spinal pain.

Despite the positive outcomes, there is uncertainty surrounding the long-term effects of CBD on pets. The FDA has not approved CBD products for animal use, and veterinarians are unable to legally prescribe them.

Lawmakers like John Mizuno are pushing for regulations to ensure the quality and safety of CBD products for both humans and animals. However, Governor David Ige’s recent veto of a bill to regulate industrial hemp could complicate the process.

Dr. Clifton Otto believes that more research is needed to determine the safety of CBD for pets. While some pet owners have reported positive results, others warn of potential negative effects if not used properly.

As the CBD industry continues to grow, it is essential for pet owners to educate themselves on the risks and benefits of using CBD for their animals. Veterinarians advise caution and recommend consulting with a professional before administering CBD to pets.
