Is Cannabis Beneficial or Harmful for Dogs? – Nevada Current

Nevada Bill Would Allow Veterinarians to Recommend CBD Products for Pets

The debate over the use of cannabis products for pets has reached the Nevada state legislature, as lawmakers consider a bill that would allow veterinarians to recommend such products for medical conditions in domestic animals.

Introduced by Democratic Assemblyman Steve Yeager, the bill aims to provide clarity and protection for veterinarians who wish to discuss the use of hemp and cannabis products with pet owners. Currently, Nevada veterinarians face uncertainty and potential disciplinary action for broaching the topic with clients.

Advocates of the bill argue that it is time for Nevada to catch up with the growing market of CBD products for pets. Jennifer Pedigo, executive director of the State of Nevada Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, emphasized the need for practitioners to have the freedom to discuss the risks and benefits of CBD with pet owners.

Republican Assemblywoman Jill Dickman shared a personal story of seeking CBD treatments for her own pet, highlighting the challenges faced by pet owners and veterinarians in navigating the legal gray area surrounding these products.

As the discussion continues, supporters of the bill hope to provide pet owners with more options for managing their pets’ health and well-being, while ensuring that veterinarians can provide informed guidance on the use of cannabis products for animals.
