Recent Study Examines the Purported Advantages of a Vegan Diet for Canines

Analysis of Owner Perceptions of Dog Health and Vegan Diets: New Insights from Research

The University of Liverpool has conducted a new study that challenges previous claims about the benefits of feeding dogs a vegan diet. The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, found that the associations between owner perceptions of their dog’s health and feeding them a vegan diet are minimal.

The previous research, which was published in April 2022, suggested that dogs fed a vegan diet fared better than those fed a conventional diet. However, the new analysis by researchers at the University of Liverpool found that the original study had limitations, including relying solely on owner survey data and not exploring possible confounding variables.

The new study conducted further statistical analyses on the original dataset and found that owner opinions of dog health were most strongly associated with the age of the dog, as well as other variables such as owner age, education, and breed size. The study concluded that variables other than dog diet are more strongly associated with owner perceptions of their dog’s health.

The findings of the study have undergone a rigorous peer review process, and the details of the review process, as well as the statistical analyses and code used, are published alongside the paper. This study provides more nuanced insights into the relationship between dog diet and owner perceptions of their health.
