Young pet owners drive India’s pet care industry

MUMBAI: Gen Z and Millennials Driving Growth in India’s Pet Care Industry
The pet care industry in India is experiencing a boom, thanks to the growing influence of millennials and Gen Z. These younger generations are not just pet ‘owners’, but they identify themselves as pet ‘parents’, leading to a surge in demand for high-quality pet products and services.
With the rise in pet adoption among Gen Z and millennials, the need for convenience and willingness to spend on their furry companions has led to the expansion of a service ecosystem in the pet care industry. From pet grooming to pet cafes and even pet insurance, the market is witnessing a significant shift.
Salil Murthy, managing director at Mars Petcare India, predicts that the industry has the potential to grow at a CAGR of 16-18% over the next few years. Pets have transitioned from being outside the house to becoming an integral part of the family, with households in big cities spending an average of Rs 5,000 or more per month on their pets.
Ishita Talwar, a 25-year-old pet parent from Jharkhand, plans her travel based on the comfort of her Labrador, showcasing the sensitivity of the younger generation towards their pets. Rashi Narang, founder of pet care startup Heads Up For Tails, notes that customers are not just buying essentials but are also exploring a wider range of pet products, including gourmet pet food and treats.
The pet care industry in India is evolving rapidly, driven by the changing mindset of millennials and Gen Z. As pets become more integrated into households, the demand for high-quality products and services is only expected to grow in the coming years.
