Kemin Industries Receives Authorization to Use Rosemary Extract in Pet Food Formulations

In a groundbreaking development for the pet food industry, Kemin Industries has been granted authorization by the European Commission to use rosemary extract as a functional additive in dog and cat food formulations. This new regulation, Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/1068, marks a significant milestone for Kemin Nutrisurance, a division of Kemin Industries dedicated to pet food and rendering ingredient technologies.

Liquid rosemary extract will now serve as an antioxidant solution in pet food, offering a natural alternative to tocopherols, which have traditionally been used in the European Union to preserve pet food. With the availability of natural tocopherols being limited, the addition of rosemary extract expands the pet food industry’s options for natural antioxidant solutions.

Beth Mann, global director of quality and food safety at Kemin Nutrisurance, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability and supply resilience in the pet food industry. She stated, “Rosemary extract is a versatile and effective antioxidant that can help pet food manufacturers meet the growing demand for clean label, high-quality, and environmentally friendly products.”

Kemin Nutrisurance has developed proprietary rosemary plants through its Specialty Crop Improvement department, which offer high levels of carnosic acid, delivering antioxidant benefits. John A. Greaves, Ph.D., vice president of Specialty Crop Improvement at Kemin Industries, expressed excitement over the authorization from the European Commission, highlighting the years of research and development that went into this achievement.

This authorization is expected to revolutionize the pet food industry, providing new possibilities for natural and sustainable pet nutrition. With the use of rosemary extract, pet food manufacturers can now enhance the quality and environmental friendliness of their products. This development opens up a new chapter in product development, ingredients, and formulation for the pet food industry.
