Former Inmate Adopts Dog After Finding Hope Behind Bars
MCLOUD, Okla. (KFOR) – Melissa Morgan, a now former inmate at the Mable Bassett Correctional Center in Oklahoma, recently made headlines for her heartwarming story of redemption and hope. Sentenced to 100 years in prison for a robbery in Tulsa County, Morgan turned her life around while incarcerated, thanks to the Guardian Angels program at the correctional center.
The Guardian Angels program allows inmates to train dogs from shelters, rescues, or families, teaching them basic commands before sending them back to their homes or putting them up for adoption. For Morgan, this program was life-changing. “I found my faith… I discovered what the word hope meant,” she shared with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.
During her time at the Mable Bassett Correctional Center, Morgan trained a dog named Ezera, who became a source of comfort and companionship for her. When the Pardon and Parole Board granted Morgan a shorter sentence, her family adopted Ezera in the hopes of reuniting him with Morgan one day.
The emotional reunion between Morgan and Ezera was described as “one of the most transformational experiences” of her life. Inmates at the correctional center praised the program for its positive impact on their mental health and overall well-being. “It’s the best thing for mental health,” one inmate shared.
ODOC officials highlighted the success of the program, with Morgan being the first inmate to adopt a dog. They hope that her story will inspire more inmates to participate in the program and experience the benefits of companionship and purpose while serving their time.
Overall, the Guardian Angels program at the Mable Bassett Correctional Center continues to be a beacon of hope and positivity for inmates, providing them with a sense of family and connection during their time behind bars. As Morgan’s story demonstrates, sometimes a furry friend can make all the difference in finding hope and redemption.
